Out of Control (The Sentinels 0.5) by Alexandra Ivy

New York Times bestselling author Alexandra Ivy quenches your thirst for illicit desire with this seductive tale of the Sentinels—outcast humans with the ability to tread the line between life and death—and pleasure and pain…

Ph.D student Angela Locke has a crush on her sexy professor, Dr. Nikolo Bartrev. When she learns he’s actually a Sentinel with extraordinary powers, she joins forces with him to catch a psychopath. But soon, their hottest pursuit is of each other…

My Thoughts:

Out of Control was an introduction to the new world of Alexandra Ivy‘s Sentinels. These beings were a combination of “normal” human beings with advanced speed and senses to beings were looked like as well as beings who looked…not so human. But altogether they were both regarded as “freaks”. All of the freaks in this world lived in Valhalla. No, not the Norse, although named after it. This Valhalla was located in a small Midwestern town, secured by a protective bubble. Although most freaks were perfectly harmless, there is one among them who is bent on destruction.

And that is pretty much where our story begins…

Angela Locke is normal, although she would consider herself quite average. Brown hair, brown eyes, and a love of science. By all accounts, a nerd. But Angela discovers that she is more than who … or rather … what she thinks she is. A rogue Sentinel is out to get the unassuming human to use her for her own purposes. Fortunately for Angela, a protector Sentinel is sent to covertly watch her — disguising himself as a visiting professor at the university where she works and is getting her doctoral degree. Sexy, Nikolo “Niko” Bartrev is a shock to Angela’s hibernated libido. She wants him but she thinks that she barely registers in his imaginings. Little does she know the stone cold Sentinel is having difficulty leashing his desire for the petite beauty. But, one encounter with a deranged psychopath throws them into a situation where they can no longer avoid their desires. And there is NO avoiding of those desires. Unfortunately, life and chaos intrude into their burgeoning affair and one of their lives hang in the balance. It’s a race to the finish to see who will live or die. And, once the dust settles, Angela has to decide whether she will embrace her new heritage as death stalks her and the man she loves.

I tried not to give away too much in my overview of Out of Control because you truly have to read it yourself :). Although it is short, the story contains a great deal of depth, not much backstory for Nico but some for Angela. I would have loved to know more about Nico before Angela. The story eludes to the fact that Nico is very old but it doesn’t say how old. It also doesn’t shed light on whether if the Sentinels are immortals or just long-lived. I also would have liked to read more information about the “freaks” were they genetic anomalies or did they receive the genes that enhanced their abilities from a parent. I know. I know. I’m asking a great deal of a novella length book, and I’m hopeful that Ivy will provide more information as the series progresses. But as the inaugural book in the series, I thought it was very well done and a wonderful prelude to things to come. I loved Niko and Angela. I thought they were perfect compliments to one another. Angela might have been naive but she was sassy and Niko — helllllloooo alpha male!

Great job, Ms. Ivy. Looking forward to reading more.
